Advocacy

Abstract Pattern 12

Trainee Well-Being

Trainee well-being is personal to me. I felt different as a minority who was poor enough to "qualify" for a Pell Grant at my University. And at Medical school, I struggled with mental health. I found out that I was not alone in my struggle with well-being.

As Vice-President of Graduate and Professional Student Government at the University of Iowa - I helped start and serve on the wellness committee, increased the number of staffing for the counseling center, led the appreciation week for students, and advocate for student wellness in the five year strategic plan for the University of Iowa Health Care.

Through organized medicine - I wrote and passed AMA resolutions and reports regarding student wellness, I serve on the AMA-MSS committee on long range planning where we set up programming for preventing student burnout, and write student wellness reports on mental health days and wellness practice, I also chaired the AMSA wellness and student life action committee. We commemorated suicide prevention month and advocated for the Lorna Breen Bill, passed in 2022.

Cultural Mental Health Care

My parents came to the United States because it was the land of opportunity, a nation of immigrants. I saw firsthand how cultural identity shapes mental health, and the difficulties immigrants face.

As a university student, I brought in multiple speakers to address immigrant rights. I coordinated a lecture by actress Diane Guerrero who starred in Orange is the New Black and DC's Doom Patrol. I also brought in Physician Advocates like UNRWA Akihiro Seita, Life Undocumented Mario Mendoza, and Project Lifeline Dona Kim Murphey. As a medical student, I coordinated a petition for humane treatment of detained immigrants, and published our call to action in USA Today. I also served on the advocacy panel for the 2019 LMSA Midwest meeting.

My advocacy continued by publishing editorial and peer-reviewed pieces of important cultural considerations when treating mental health. In addition, I have helped advocate for Asian Youth Suicide Prevention through policy and educational initiatives. â€‹
